French for Fun Time - 02:15 Week - Second + Fourth Day - Wednesday Group Organiser(s) - Ben Dearman Venue - Members' Homes Vacancies - 1 The St Albans U3A French for Fun group began in January 2023 with people who are able to chat away in French confidently, despite the mistakes which we all make, and have an interest in France, with all its intriguing differences from the UK. We have 8 members currently and meet in each other's homes, though constraints of available space and parking need to be clarified. We will keep the size of the group under review. We meet fortnightly on Wednesday afternoons which helps us all to plan ahead, though health issues and holidays may mean varying attendance. We have decided that we want to talk only in French, though of course the odd bit of English will creep in. We want to have a mixture of general conversation and specific topics. We discuss culture, films, sample wine and cheese and current affairs we meet in members' homes and in gardens or a local park where the weather permits. Cheese was our first specialist subject to discuss, though this needs to be revisited in view of its complexity in France, probably with some more tasting. We talk a lot about France - its customs, history and how it functions -and our experiences of the country. There might be the occasional trip to have lunch across the Channel if that seems an attractive idea to the group. And maybe other subjects or activities to amuse ourselves. Meeting together has been stimulating - and fun - and we want to keep it that way. Ben Dearman, Sept 2024
