Each month we usually each read the same book, chosen from a list of titles drawn up by Group members. Our Group is registered with St Albans Library which, for the princely sum of £25/year shared between members, allows us to borrow sufficient copies for 6 weeks so that we have time to read the chosen book and discuss it.

Our choice of titles has been eclectic although we have occasionally pursued a theme - for example ie read 6 Booker prize winners in succession trying to understand why they had won: sometimes we did and sometimes we didn't! We have latterly concentrated (but not exclusively) on more recently published work. Our list for the last 14 months was:

The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gower
Disclaimer by Renée Knight
The Power by Naomi Alderman
The Party by Elizabeth Day
Utopia Avenue by David Mitchell
Melmoth by Sara Perry
Big Sky by Kate Atkinson
The Midnight  Library by Matt Haig,
My Name is Why by Lemn Sissay
A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
10 minutes 38 seconds in this strange world by Elif Shafak
The Secret River by Kate Grenville
The Girls of Slender Means by Muriel Spark
The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer

Some of these were challenging reads but all of them prompted the lively discussion we enjoy. If you would be interested in joining us, please make contact via the link above
